Prof Cassidy commented: “We know that fruits and vegetables are good for our health. But we probably need more targeted advice, because they’re not all created equally.”
The scientists found that two specific types of flavonoids were particularly beneficial: anthocyanins and flavanones. The former are found in dark-coloured fruits such as blackberries, blueberries, and blackcurrants, while the latter are found in citrus fruits such as oranges, mandarins, and grapefruits.
Flavonoids are also found in tea, coffee, and red wine, although the alcohol will probably cancel out any health benefits as far as sexual function is concerned. Furthermore, they can benefit cardiovascular health, which in turn can mitigate against the risk of ED.
