Men in need of medication to tackle their erectile dysfunction issues may find they can get great results if they buy cheap sildenafil online. But the drug, known in its original patented form as Viagra, was once close to being associated with another form of ‘results’.

When it came to delightful touches, lots of penetration and a wonderful finish, Barcelona Football Club was the best in the business a few years ago, in contrast to the floundering performances and financial woes of the club today.

Back then, it was not just on the field that there was much to admire. Off it, the club had refused to follow the approach of other clubs in using shirt sponsorship to increase revenue. Indeed, when the club finally did decide to have a name emblazoned across the maroon and blue kit, they actually subverted the whole principle by paying UNICEF to display their logo.

However, in time the club decided it needed more cash, with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City appearing with mega-rich owners. Club president Joan Laporta, then in his first term in charge, set about finding sponsors in 2008 and has revealed that a firm selling Viagra approached the club.

Naturally, there are any numbers of puns that could be made about this idea, all of which might have been a bit of a distraction from the brilliant football the team was to play. With Pep Guardiola taking charge of the team that year and Lionel Messi being backed up by the brilliant midfield skills of Andres Iniesta and Xavi, this was certainly a team on the rise and one that enjoyed being on top.

Mr Laporta’s revelation, made in a membership meeting where he discussed the difficulties of finding an appropriate sponsor, made clear he thought the idea “did not seem appropriate”.

While that may have been Barcelona’s view, it is understandable that anyone selling an erectile dysfunction drug might want to be associated with one of the very few things men think and talk about as much as sex. After all, this might, one could reason, break down a few taboos and get sufferers to open up a bit about such issues – a key first step to seeking help.

Indeed, when Viagra first appeared Pfizer took a football-related approach with a series of adverts screened around 20 years ago, starring the Brazilian legend Pele. “Talk to your doctor, I would”, he said.

Getting good medical advice is something anyone suffering erectile dysfunction should have no hesitation in doing, whether or not they are urged to do so by brand names on football shirts or a famous former player.

Alas, Barcelona right now are a club that would attract rather more jokes if they were sponsored by an erectile dysfunction drug, given the way years of mismanagement on and off the field has left them with a poor team and deep debt.

Right now, everything there is a dysfunctional flop, nothing Messi but wonderful can happen because he’s left for Paris Saint-Germain, moments of joy and ecstasy are lacking, and it could be a long time before the club stands tall again.  The only long and hard thing is the road to recovery. If your performances in the bedroom are starting to resemble Barcelona’s on the field, taking Pele’s advice may be a particularly good idea.
