Avodart is a prescription medication containing dutasteride 0.5mg. It works by reducing levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone involved in both prostate enlargement and male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia).
Although originally licensed in the UK for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), dutasteride may also be prescribed off-label for men experiencing progressive hair thinning, following assessment by a qualified prescriber.
Male pattern baldness is largely driven by sensitivity to DHT. This hormone can bind to hair follicles in genetically predisposed men, causing them to shrink over time. As follicles miniaturise, hair becomes finer, shorter and eventually stops growing.
Dutasteride works by inhibiting both type I and type II 5-alpha reductase enzymes, significantly reducing DHT levels in the body. Lower DHT levels may help slow the progression of hair thinning in suitable patients.
It is important to note:

-Treatment must be continued to maintain effect
-It does not create new follicles
-It does not provide immediate results
Hair growth cycles take time, and visible changes may take several months.
Dutasteride inhibits two types of 5-alpha reductase enzymes, whereas finasteride inhibits one. Because of this, dutasteride typically reduces DHT levels to a greater degree.
However, suitability depends on individual factors and medical history. A prescriber will determine whether dutasteride, finasteride or another treatment is appropriate for you.
Hair loss treatments require ongoing use. Stopping treatment may result in the gradual return of hair thinning.

Hair loss treatment requires patience. Some men may begin to notice reduced shedding within several months, but visible improvement can take 6–12 months.
Avodart contains Dutasteride which may help slow hair thinning and support the maintenance of existing hair. Results vary, and it is not a guaranteed regrowth treatment.
Avodart contains dutasteride which typically reduces DHT levels more significantly than finasteride. However, higher DHT suppression does not automatically mean it is suitable for everyone.
As with other DHT-reducing medications, side effects may include reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, breast tenderness or mood changes. Not everyone experiences side effects.

Some treatment plans combine oral DHT suppression with topical minoxidil (such as Regaine). Your prescriber can advise whether combination therapy is appropriate.
