Noticing the first signs of hair loss can be a tricky time, particularly if you are in the prime of life and take pride in your appearance. Fortunately, there are treatments available to slow or even reverse hair loss that is caused by male pattern baldness. One of the most widely used and effective is Propecia, which is much cheaper to buy as finasteride

The treatment takes about three to six months to produce noticeable results: if taken correctly, you should see your hair growth is much thicker and fuller within this timescale. In the meantime, there are plenty of steps you can take to boost your grooming routine and ensure that your scalp stays healthy and you look great for summer events.

Change up your haircut

If you are still trying to cling on to your pre-hair loss hairstyle, it might be time for a rethink. Shorter styles tend to look more flattering on men with thinning or receding hair. They are also cooler and more manageable for summer. Here are some suggestions.

Buzz cut

There are several variations of the buzz cut, and the overall effect somewhat depends on the type of hair and shape of the head. The classic buzz cut is a short clip all over, in the style of a new military recruit. This flatters thinning hair because there’s less contrast between the fuller and sparser areas. It also looks smart and is super low maintenance.

Crew cut

A crew cut is slightly longer than a buzz cut, and another military favourite because it’s smart, practical and low maintenance. The classic crew cut has short tapered sides and is slightly longer on top. It can work well with widow’s peak hairlines that are thinning around the sides of the temples.

Short textured crop

If you are used to having longer hair and do not want a more drastic cut, a short textured crop is a modern and youthful style. Use lightweight hair products to add texture and volume to the top of the head, helping to create the illusion of fuller hair.

Shaved head

A shaved head is a bolder look, but it can be a fresh start while you wait for finasteride to take effect. It is becoming a popular style choice for men with all kinds of hair, and is obviously easy to look after and maintain.

Rethink your styling products

If you’ve opted for a slightly longer look that requires styling, avoid using heavy waxes and gels, and these tend to flatten the hair and the build up can clog up follicles and draw attention to thinner patches on the scalp. Instead, use volumising sprays or dry shampoo to create lift at the roots, and clays with matt finishes to add texture without greasiness.

Wash your hair with a mild sulphate-free shampoo and lukewarm water, massaging gently with your finger tips rather than scrubbing.

Protect your scalp from the sun

A thinning crown or receding hairline leaves your scalp more exposed and prone to sunburn. The skin in these newly revealed areas will be more sensitive to the effect of the sun and burn easily, which can be painful and also increases the risk of skin cancer.  Wear a UV-protective hat or cap when you will be outdoors for more than an hour or so.

Otherwise, use a non-greasy SPF spray to protect your scalp. This not only protects your skin, but also supports healthier hair follicles and stronger regrowth.

Finally, remember that you need to take finasteride consistently for it to work, so set daily reminders if you tend to forget or will be out of your usual routine during travel or holidays.
