Varenicline is a prescription medication used to support smoking cessation. It contains the same active ingredient previously available under the brand name Champix® and was reintroduced to the UK market in 2024.
It is designed to help adults stop smoking by reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms while also making cigarettes less satisfying if smoked during treatment.
Varenicline is supplied following medical assessment and is typically used as part of a structured quit plan.
Nicotine stimulates receptors in the brain that release dopamine — a chemical associated with pleasure and reward.
Varenicline works in two ways:
-It partially stimulates nicotine receptors, helping reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
-It blocks nicotine from binding fully to these receptors, making smoking less rewarding if you do smoke.
This dual mechanism helps reduce both the physical urge to smoke and the satisfaction derived from cigarettes.
We supply varenicline in several structured formats:
Starter Pack (2 Weeks – 25 Tablets) - For those preparing to quit and beginning treatment before their chosen quit date.
Full 12-Week Course - The standard recommended duration for smoking cessation treatment.
Continuation Packs - For individuals who have already stopped smoking and are continuing their programme:
-28 tablets (2 weeks)
-56 tablets (4 weeks)
Your prescriber will advise which option is appropriate based on your progress and quit plan.

It may improve the likelihood of successfully quitting compared to unaided attempts. However:
-Success varies between individuals
-Motivation and behavioural support are important
-No treatment can guarantee quitting

Common side effects may include:
-Nausea
-Headache
-Sleep disturbance or vivid dreams
-Insomnia
Less commonly, mood changes or behavioural changes have been reported.
If you experience low mood, agitation, or unusual behavioural changes, seek medical advice promptly.
-For adults aged 18 and over
-Not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women
-Use with caution in those with a history of mental health conditions
-Not suitable for individuals with certain kidney conditions without dose adjustment
