Erectile dysfunction (also known as impotence) is a very common condition, particularly affecting men over the age of 40 – so if you are experiencing symptoms, trust that you’re certainly not alone in this and that there is plenty of support available, as well as many different and highly effective forms treatment you can take.

Here, you can find out all about erectile dysfunction and how it can be addressed by taking Viagra tablets, which is the most common brand of treatment for the condition.

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is characterised as being either unable to get an erection or unable to sustain one long enough to have sex.

There are different root causes for the condition, ranging from physical to psychological, so it’s important to find out what lies behind your symptoms in order to find the most appropriate form of treatment.

For example, if your symptoms are caused by diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure, you may need to make certain lifestyle changes and take specific medication in order to regain typical sexual function.

If, however, your symptoms are the result of depression, anxiety or stress, it may be necessary to see a counsellor or therapist, as well as taking medication and making lifestyle changes to regain control.

Regardless of the specific root cause, however, you can take Viagra tablets to help you enjoy a more satisfying sex life while you address the other issues that may be causing difficulties.

What are Viagra tablets?

As we mentioned earlier, Viagra is the most popular brand choice for treating erectile dysfunction.

Also known as ‘the little blue pill’, its use as a treatment option for impotence was discovered quite accidentally by two British scientists… a serendipitous event that millions of men around the world are, no doubt, very happy about indeed.

The scientists in question, Peter Dunn and Albert Wood, were actually working on a drug called sildenafil citrate, which they believed would be effective at treating hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina (chest pain associated with coronary heart disease).

The drug itself was later patented for medication by Dr Nicholas Terrett in 1991, but initial testing results for serious cardiovascular conditions proved to be disappointing… although all was not yet lost, as one of the most obvious side-effects during drug trials was extremely hard erections.

Where do Welsh miners fit into the Viagra story?

While Viagra is now most certainly a household name and, in fact, one of the most well-known brands the world over, it could very easily have been a different story if a group of Welsh miners hadn’t stepped in.

The drug itself was just about to be scrapped because of its lack of efficacy where cardiovascular medication was concerned, but before the trials were shut down a fresh study was carried out in Merthyr Tydfil in south Wales, a town that was facing serious issues with poverty and unemployment following closures of the local coalmines.

With drug trial participation set at £300, there were plenty of eager volunteers for this final study. Come the end, while many of the participants appeared to have been reluctant to share the side-effects of the treatment, one was confident enough to say that he had been experiencing erections all night, which then led to others reporting similar experiences.

Greater scrutiny was then finally paid to the penile effects of sildenafil citrate and it was discovered that the drug, which had been developed to relax blood vessels around the heart to help improve blood flow, was having the same effect on penis arteries… and thus, Viagra was born, launching commercially in 1998!

If you want to find out even more about this particular aspect of the intriguing tale of one of the world’s most famous drugs, there’s a BBC drama called Men Up (executively produced by none other than Russell T Davies) that could prove both educational and entertaining to watch.

It could also help pave the way for having difficult conversations with your partner about your symptoms and how you’re feeling, subjects that are often very tricky to broach amid concerns over embarrassment, shame, the potential for negative reactions and so on.

But remember that erectile dysfunction is very common and it can have negative impacts on interpersonal relationships if it goes unaddressed. It can be beneficial to discuss matters with  your GP first if you’re worried about how your partner will react, or if you’re unsure how to go about starting the conversation.

What to do if you think you have erectile dysfunction

If you’re concerned about your symptoms, make an appointment with your GP so you can get a proper diagnosis and find the underlying cause of the problem.

It’s entirely normal to feel embarrassed about this, but the longer your case goes undiagnosed the more likely it is that it will start to take its toll on you mentally and emotionally, as well as physically.

Remember that your GP is a professional and well used to having such conversations, so they’ll be able to put you at your ease and give you the support you need.

Tests you may undergo to identify the root cause of your condition include a physical exam of the penis and testicles, blood tests (for signs of diabetes, low testosterone, heart disease and so on), urine tests, ultrasounds and mental health assessments.

While you wait for a diagnosis and recommended course of treatment, there are ways you can potentially help ease your symptoms:

Quit smoking

If you smoke, consider quitting or cutting back as much as you can, as the habit can damage blood vessels and reduce blood flow to the penis, making it harder to achieve and maintain erections.

Lose weight

If you’re overweight, consider following a well-balanced diet and getting more exercise to help you lose weight, as being heavier can cause erectile dysfunction or make symptoms worse.

Being overweight can cause changes in hormones, leading to lower testosterone, as well as creating low level inflammation that affects the lining of blood vessels, which are necessary for typical sexual function.

Get more exercise

As well as helping you to maintain a healthy weight, being more physically active and getting more exercise can help with other underlying causes of your erectile dysfunction, such as stress, depression and anxiety.

Avoid alcohol

If you drink to excess or take illicit drugs, this can both cause erectile dysfunction and make symptoms worse.

Consider counselling

If you have relationship concerns, couples counselling can be effective at helping you work through your troubles so that you and your partner can address any health concerns (as well as other aspects of your relationship) together.
